The Quaker Parakeet, also known as the Monk Parrot (Myiopsitta monachus), is a small to medium-sized parrot belonging to the class Aves and the order Psittaciformes. Native to South America, Quakers are found in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia. In the wild, they live in open woodlands, savannas, and scrublands, where they are well known for building large, communal nests out of sticks—an unusual behavior among parrots that allows them to thrive even in cooler climates.
They typically grow to about 11–12 inches long and have a sturdy, compact build. These birds are highly social and form strong bonds with their flock or human caretakers. They are playful and energetic, always curious about their surroundings and eager to interact. Some Quakers can also be excellent talkers—often better than many larger parrots—and can learn a wide range of words and phrases.
One of their most distinctive behaviors is “quaking” or “quivering,” a natural motion they make when excited, affectionate, or seeking attention.
Each baby will be starter trained and should by the time they leave know “Step up” command and sometimes even “kisses” or beginner recall (Come On/here) for a fast learner. Just continue this training and add other commands after learning some of the basics first. Continuing training at home will help perfect and starter training.
Our Quakers are provided some chewable toys, a swing, concrete or cuttlebone nail trimming perch (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in width). Cuttle bones or mineral blocks are recommended if the bird is not eating pellets with high calcium, such as Roudybush. Hanging toys with wood or ropes are a must so they have something to satisfy chewing urges. The larger the cage you can provide is recommended so they can spread their wings and move about without bumping into sides of cage or toys. We recommend a 24" x 24" wide cage or larger with bar spacing at about 3/4" or less.
Currently we breed green opalines, blue opalines, turquoise opalines, dark eye yellow, dark eye white, and dark eye creaminos….. more photos coming soon
